Ford Expands Mustang Mach-E Police Evaluation To Michigan

As the current dominant provider of police vehicles in the US market, Ford is no newcomer to offering electrified powertrains to law enforcement. Several years ago, Ford kicked off its efforts with a police version of the Fusion hybrid sedan and now offers hybrid versions of both the Explorer and F-150. Ford released images of a police package Mustang Mach-E making the rounds in the UK and this weekend, a similar vehicle will be hitting the track in Michigan.

Every September, the Michigan State Police conducts a round up of all the currently available police package vehicles and conducts several days of instrumented testing and other evaluations. The results are published and made available to all police agencies for use in the selection process when purchasing new vehicles.

The current lineup of Ford police and special service vehicles (these are often used by fire departments, park rangers and other agencies as well) includes the F-150, Transit, Expedition and Explorer. Ford hasn’t made an official commitment to offer a police version of the Mach-E yet, but it has prepared a prototype for agencies to evaluate. Ford commercial vehicles spokesman Dan Pierce told Forbes that if the testing goes well, an electric police vehicle may be offered in the future.

As with other commercial vehicle customers, police agencies are concerned about not just performance, but total cost of ownership. These vehicles are often sitting idling and electrification can significantly reduce overall energy consumption. Contrary to what we see in TVs and movies, most of these vehicles are never involved in chases. While the Mach-E is certainly quick, it’s lower energy consumption may be very appealing to these agencies in addition to reduced service and maintenance costs.

The Mach-E wouldn’t be the first electric vehicle used by law enforcement, a number of agencies have utilized EVs ranging from the Smart ForTwo electric and Nissan Leaf to various Teslas but none of those have ever been official police package offerings from the manufacturers. The Mach-E could potentially be the first factory police EV if it gets offered and it will likely be followed soon after by the e-Transit and F-150 Lightning.
